I put him off as long as possible, but then Kata started in as well, telling me what a worthy young man Drugeth was, how much wealth and honor would be heaped on the family through such a marriage, so that I thought the boy might have been coaching her. “Please, Mother,” she begged, flinging herself on me in my rooms at night. “If I cannot have him, I would rather have no one at all. I would rather die alone and childless than marry someone else.”
