For example, while both football and basket- ball rely predominantly on colleges to develop their players, for baseball the colleges are not an effective subst...itute for the minor leagues.
The viability of the current minor league system depends largely on the major league teams' ability to retain the- services of their prospects through both their tenure in the minor leagues and also for a period of time after they reach the majors. This assurance is needed so that the teams might recoup the substantial investment in minor league prospects, an investment on which they realize no return while the prospect is in the minor leagues. The protection at the minor league level is currently provided by the minor league uniform players contract, giving the employing club approximately a maximum of six seasons of exclusive rights to the player.
