In fact, the whole matter that had so fearfully disturbed her, now seemed, as far as she was concerned, ridiculous ; " and I am a weak-minded fool," thought Eliza, *' and I will shake off the timidity of spirit, that, without being able to assign a cause, thus bows before one who seems herself to act more from head- strong impulse than from sober reason." And yet, once again, the pale and distorted face of her young friend, filled with its newly- 94 THE CROPPY.
