They areinhabited by dark-skinned races; still the most savage among those ofthe Pacific, such as the New Hebrides, Santa Cruz, Solomon Islands, andNew Ireland, to the eastward of New Guinea. They produce the finestsandal-wood, and Harry determined to visit some of them, in order toobtain a supply before ret...urning home. He had, however, settled to callfirst, as I have said, at the islands, where he hoped to be able topurchase palm-oil. The first we reached after this was very similar to those alreadydescribed. The natives, as we appeared, came off to the schooner intheir canoes, and invited us to enter a secure harbour into which theyoffered to pilot her. Several of those who boarded us were dressed inshirts, and one of them spoke a sufficient amount of English to makehimself understood. He said that two native missionaries were settledon the island, and that all the inhabitants were Christians.
