The marten, weasel, and polecat, all belonging to the same group of carnivorous mammals, were not clearly distinguished in anti- quity (see Hehn, Kulturpflanzen und HausHere,^ p. 449). The mustela corresponds to the weasel, the meles to the marten or badger. The characteristics of the fdes seem to be those of this same group of animals.
