At that time this entire province was closed to foreigners and the proud city of Nanchang was quite outside the currents of modern progress. But the wife of this gentleman was ill and he had heard that there were two Chinese girls in Kiukiang who had recently returned from the study of Western medicine as it is practiced in THE DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT IN ASIA Ann Arbor. These girls had been adopted as babies by a missionary, Miss Gertrude Howe, educated as her own children, and were now at work in the Methodist Hospital for Women in Kiukiang.
