What reading level is The Democratic Party And Philippine Independence book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

There will always be a body of resident Americans, anxious to make money quick and looking down upon the natives, despis- ing them, misinterpreting them, and trying to profit at their ex- pense, just as the resident Americans are doing now. There will always be governors naturally solicitous for the success of their administration, and never wilUng to disclose the facts which might lead to criticism or condemnation. They will always tell the American people, as Mr. Taft tells us now, that they
...are "very little able to understand " the situation. There will always be the busy, good-natured American people, knowing little and caring less about their distant subjects, taking, as the Hartford Courant says, less "interest in these people" than "in the fading American Indians," believing what Americans say because they are of their own flesh and blood, and content to let the govern- ment manage the islands.
The American people will no more resist the selfish demands of American adventurers or protect the Filipino against them than they have protected the Indians against spoliation, or than they protected the Southern States from Northern "carpet- baggers." We shall deal with the Filipinos as the English have dealt with the people of India, who, after centuries of English rule, are not so near independence as they were at the be- ginning.
