THE DEMON OF THE ORIENT. 79 The subject I was interested in was shortly brought upon the tapis by an Apparently casual remark from my friend. The actor in whom my interest had been first excited, said be had smoked opium through motives of curiosity two or three times in New York. He had afterward spent considerable time in San Francisco, and he took occasion to sourly declaim against the monotony of life there. "You see," he said, "there's nothing to do there; you're in a city, but it's devili...sh dry for a stranger. Yon haven't got ' the square' you know, to lounge in. The ordinary occupations of eating, drinking and sleep- ing, grow very stale, and wbm somebody proposes to go low and do Chinatown, a fellow is ready and willing enough to see something out of the usual way even if it is only to be found among Patagonians. In the joints of Chinatown there was where I got stuck on opium, and it knocks whiskey clean ont of time. As a rule the joints in the Chinatov/ii of Frisco are not a circum- stance to these, in the matter of space, ventilation or comfort; but the ■worse they were the better we liked them.
