It was usual to carry the corpse on a bier or bed, without any other covering than a cloth ; and whoever was so carried out, many mourned for him. Persons well known were acoompa* jried by great numbers j for it was looked upon as an act of kindness and great mercy to follow a corpse to the grave ; and it was forbidden to do any work when a man was buried, even though he were one of the com- mon people.
