Gordon passed on unheeding in a humour much less triumphant than cynical, for in spite of his love of horses he had taken a mortal aversion to racing, "I do not find much pleasure now in ridiug," he writes the week after this Cup festival ; ** I did not go near the course on Cup Day, nor yet on Friday; and on Saturday, after my steeplechase was over, I locked myself up in one of the empty horse-boxes in the saddling paddock, and smoked a pipe while the other races were being run.
