Admittedly, he did not understand the dynamics of the model (at least initially), but he did accept each equation employed in the computer program. The fact that these equations could be related to the model components directly in a way the Manager could accept was crucial. Basically the model was useful to him only because he had made an evaluation of its validity.
The model was useful in a number of other situations as well. I want to outline two of these briefly to show the pervasive influen...ce of managerial models.
For some time a project had been underway within the Northern plant to define appropriate control variables through which the Manager could monitor and influence the manufacturing process. The intention was to provide the Manager with information systems support in the form of measurements of these variables once they were defined.
