The papers were full of i>a- triotic telegrams from every part of the Empire competing- with each other in the vigor of their language. Crete was made an idol which ate up all the energies and all the en- thusiasm the people could devote to public matters. As the gfreat majority of the Turkish population was extremely sen- sitive regarding territorial gains and losses, the words spent, and reflected through public channels, in behalf of the " sacred " island, gave everybody a deep sense of satisfac- tion and achievement at an extremely low cost.
