Although the Island of Crete had long been lost to Turkey, the right of hoisting a Turkish flag at Suda Bay being the only remaining trace of Turkish dominion, and although there was no hope of winning back more positive rights of sovereignity, a tremendous agitation was made for the sake of the island.
