The canvas at the man’s feet, laid down to catch the blood, was swimming with the rapidly blackening gore, as it mixed with the sea water which had been thrown over the gaping wounds of the previous “offenders.”As soon as the punishments ended, hands would be set to swabbing and holystoning the deck.
