The most easily observed is a fetid odour of the breath. This sign is very commonly, though not invariably, met with in toxic cases ; on the other hand it is occasionally to be observed in cases which hardly attain to the toxic standard. The symptom will not be con- fused with the foul odour encountered in certain cases of confluent smallpox, which is merely an emanation from the suppurating skin.
