They will not only fully comprehend this initiatory les- son, but they will feel a manifest delight that one simple explanation has so greatly added to their knowledge of the meaning of Avords. Ihe intelli- gent teacher will not fail to perceive that the more closely he is able to accomodate his teaching to the knowledge of the words which belong to the pupils' own vocabulary, the more rapid will be their progress, and the more intense will be the interest w^hich they will take in the new study.
