Such, then, is the N. T. Conception of salvation from the point of view of remedy. As has been already said it is not a mere figure of speech : it is a new attitude. When Christ revealed God as the Father in heaven, was that a mere metaphor ? Was it not essentially a new attitude to God? So if we look at the gospel under this con- ception we see it from ...a new view-point altogether. Things that we before neglected become of prime import- ance, while things that we thought important may no longer seem so. We gain both theoretically and prac- tically: theoretically, because the doctrines of our faith are closely correlated with experience all the time, and thus become vital and real at every point ; and practically, 1 Tertullian, De Bap. I. 2 Ignatius, Justin and Irenseus.
