From three to six fluid ounces (or even more) are usually required to occasion total anaesthesia in cattle. However, it is to be remembered that complete insensi- bility is not often necessary in the case of oxen, and indeed, partly owing to the difficulty with which these animals are brought under the influence of chloro- form, and also partly on account of the rarity of important operations in cattle practice, it is not often necessary that anaesthesia should be brought about.
