Definition. — A disease of unknown origin, affecting the blood and nervous system, strictly confined to certain locali- ties in the Western and Southern States. Cause. — This very strange disease has completely puzzled all observers to account for its appearance. It is developed in cattle by pasturing in certain definite localities, a particu- lar meadow, mountain side or bottom. Many have attrib- uted it to eating some poisonous plants, especially the white snake root, Eupatorium ageratoides. ...But the flora of the localities in question has been repeatedly scrutinized by competent botanists, and no plant whatever of a poisonous Milh Sickness. 305 character discovered, (and it appears where the snake root is unknown, and is unknown where that plant is common), have assigned it to drinking water, and others again to an " emanation from the soil." But all these are guesses only. It is common in some parts of Ohio, Indiana, Southern Illinois, Tennessee and South Carolina. One of its most serious features is that it is communicable to man through the milk of diseased animals j and it is in many instances incurable, and finally fatal.
