To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The tendency of the myth is to express more and more clearly the idea which it foreshews. "^ Undoubtedly in the narrative of the Fall " the repre- sentation was the actual apprehension of the reality, " and the truth was seen in the narrative, and not separ- ated from it. AMiatever may have been the origin of the narrative, whether or not it was brought from the Mesopotamian home of the race, it has been adopted by inspiration, and stamped with a Divine authority, as teaching us what we can kno...w of " man's first disobedi- ence, " and the entry of sin into the world by the opposi- tion of man's will to God's. Exception is sometimes taken to the application of the term myth or aUegonj to the story of the Fall, as though it of necessity implied a doubt as to the essential reality of the truth conveyed by the story. I desire most emphatically to disclaim any such intention. But I do hold that it is legitimate to maintain that this narrative is not to be understood as literal history any more than the visions of the Apocalypse are to be under- stood as literal descriptions of heaven.
