In the case of several of these names^ we have no difficulty in determining from what they are translated ; thus, Helio-dorus may be Ra-meses ; Ammono-dotus, Amen-othph ; Taurus, Horus, spelt Thorns in the enchorial language ; Maris, Mephres (Thothmosis I.); Mercury, Thothmosis II. ; Stamenemes, Amonmai ; Thusimares the Sun, Thuoris (Rameses V.) This series of kings would be of great use in our chronological enquiries, if we could identify the names with those of Manetho ; we could then determine what Eratosthenes meant by the ^^ year of the world," and make use of his methodical arrangement of re- ferring them all to a common epoch.
