Common or native gold is a soft, highly ductile and malleable metal, heavy in weight (about nineteen times the weight of water), and free from tarnish; in the solid rock it occurs as strings, flakes, and crystalloids, fre- quently in association with iron pyrites, and occupying cavities in the " rotten " rock which have been left by their decomposition. In the river-washes, " placer " deposits, it is also found in flakes, grains, and scales, and at times as " nuggets " of considerable size and weight.
