Even Seneca, the emperor's tutor, formed so close an intimacy with Paul, finding in him divine knowledge, that he could scarcely live for a moment without conversing with the apostle ; and when he was prevented from listening to liis words, he sought by an interchange of letters to enjoy the charms of friendly communication, and to profit by his good advice. But while these two illustrious apostles thus shed a divine lustre, not only amongst the Komans, but also amono:st all who from different countries thronged to Home, the capital of the world, the elders of the synagogues and some chief men of the gentiles, inflamed with bitter zeal, stirred up the hatred of the turbulent mob against the apostles by their impious accusations.
