John still refused to yield ; issued a peremptory mandate to the clergy of the province forbidding them, on pain of his displeasure, to acknowledge Eugene as their metropolitan; and though De Tickhull died in 1203, the king, bent on maintaining his patronage, nominated another Englishman, Ralph Le Petit, archdeacon of Meath, to the office.
