The investigators were instructed to endeavor to learn the man's industrial history before and after the accident and any other facts having a bearing upon the problem of his readjustment. The plea for this very personal information was made upon the ground that it would be of service in planning the work for crippled soldiers and sailors. The response was, on the whole, ready and sympathetic. There were... a few who suspected the motives of the workers and were quite reticent, and a few Germans were found who bridled at the mention of American soldiers and sailors. The poorer people were found to be more ready to answer the questions asked than the well-to-do. One of the workers re- marked, "they are so used to being investigated that they take it quite as a matter of course.
