This furnace is generally used to finish steel which has been blown in the Bessemer converter. The steel is blown until the car- bon, silicon, etc. , are practically all removed. It is then brought in a ladle, the slag is skimmed off, and the metal is poured into the electric furnace. Lime and iron-ore are added to make a basic slag for the removal of the phosphorus which in the original metal is about o. I per cent. This slag is allowed to act on the metal for about half an hour, during which

STEEL FROM METALLIC INGREDIENTS 221 by the oxidizing action of the iron-ore, and the lime is needed to combine with the oxidized phosphorus and retain it in the slag. The furnace is then tilted slightly and the slag is raked out, thus getting rid of the phosphorus. A fresh slag is made by adding lime and fluor-spar.
