This furnace is generally used to finish steel which has been blown in the Bessemer converter. The steel is blown until the car- bon, silicon, etc. , are practically all removed. It is then brought in a ladle, the slag is skimmed off, and the metal is poured into the electric furnace. Lime and iron-ore are added to make a basic slag for the removal of the phosphorus which in the original metal is about o. I per cent.
