Considerable economy can be effected by using a condensing engine, but where the waste steam can be used for other purposes, as for instance boiling or drying, a non-condensing engine may be found, at a lower cost, quite as economical, and even more so. The principle upon which gas engines work is fundamentally dif- ferent from that upon which the steam engine works. In the steam engine the piston is moved by the pressure of the steam ; in the gas engine the gas itself exerts no pressure upon the piston, but the necessary pressure is produced by the explosion which is made to take place through mixing gas with the neces- sary volume of air and igniting it.
