What reading level is The English Novelists book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Ann Radcliffe. She was born in London 1764 where she died 1823. She is the founder of a new school of prose fiction of which the chief agent is terror in its wildest fancy. Her best renowned romances are: The Romance of the Forest^ 1791, The Mysteries of Udolpho^ 1794, and The Italian, 1797. The authoress, great force consists in describing scenes of horror and sinfulness. Her tales are terrible and dreadful. Even in depicting landscapes of which she has a great power, she introduces gloomy pic...tures of scenery. The gifted authoress knows how to arouse our curiosity, even keen suspense mingled with terror in the course of her tales. Her descriptions of pathetic scenes are masterly, such as the intro- duction of The Mysteries of Udolpho which relates the death of Madame St. Aubert and her husband. The last words of M. St. Aubert when on his death-bed, which he spoke to his poor, forlorn daughter Emily, are a true picture of the tenderest paternal feelings and cares. The love between Valancourt and Emily which was engendered amidst melancholy circumstances is touchingly narrated.
