After gazing at her for some time, he stoops, and listens, to hear if she breathes ; and, finding that she does, he endeavours to remove her armour : but at length has to cut it with his sword. As he lifts it off her form, he sees with amazement her long, white garment, and exclaims, " That is not a man. " Then, suddenly, he is seized with ^tM and trembling, and calling out, — " Mother, mother " —, he sinks dowai on to his knees, and, resting his forehead on Briinnhilde's bosom, remains motion- less for some minutes.
