There were many men being almost unconsciously pre- pared to play the parts of such leaders as Tyndale, Cranmer, and Latimer, just as in the state the national spirit had grown so strong that Parliaments were ready to assert the independence of the English people. Henry Vlll ascended the throne of Eng- land in 1509, and reigned until 1547, and thus lived during the period of the acute stages of church reform. It... was natural that he should be a conspicuous figure in 8o The Episcopalians the discussions of the time; and in the strange way that providence often acts the personal desires of this man made him co- operate with the forces that were every- where making for reform and freedom. Henry was designed by his father for the priesthood, for his brother Arthur was the heir apparent, and had been married to Cath- erine of Aragon to secure a close alliance with Spain. Henry's interest in theological matters was therefore strong from the first, rather on the polemical than on the spiritual side.
