Nevertheless, it seems that thus far all the happenings are rather the mechanical effects of wave action and of the continuous earthquakes, than of a general subsidence of the entire volcano.

We do not know what cause or causes will be assig...ned by those who have made in- vestigations on the spot, to explain the great reach of the destructive effects of the eruption in the directions west and west-northwest, but are of the opinion that, in discussing the subject, three factors must be kept in mind: 1. The configuration of the crater, the location of the eruptive opening, and the character of the discharge. The interior crater walls have a mean height of 150 meters (492 feet) on the eastern side, while on the western they rise only to 120 to 125 meters (394 to 410 feet).
