To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Now at this time, on account of the close connection between Church and State, unworthy men some- times became priests, or monks, or even bishops. Consequently there were among the churchmen some who had committed grave crimes. These people were treated much more leniently by the church authorities than Henry's courts would have dealt with them. The church laws, in fact, did not permit a man to be put to death, no matter what crime he might have committed, because the Church forbade its courts ...to shed blood. The efforts that Henry made to change this and to bring all offenders, whether churchmen or not, under his jurisdiction, brought upon him the most serious trouble of his whole life. One day, as Thomas a Becket was leaving the king's presence preparatory to starting on a long journey, Henry called him back to announce to him that he designed to appoint him to the highest church position in all England, the archbishopric of Canterbury. Thomas remonstrated, assuring the king that such an office did not suit a man so gay and worldly as he.
