"What is more, Mr. Tusher, I don't want any campaign money spent there that can possibly be avoided. Of course, I don't want it to be made noticeable that we are not sup...porting Bradwell. But you understand me. " "All right, " replied Tusher. "But, " he added, laughing, "it will be an even fight, then. Em- mersley hasn't got a dollar, and there isn't a cent in the Populist campaign fund, so far as I can find out. " "Well, let it go at that, then, " said Gardwell. "What's new?" Tusher gave a glowing account of the prospects of success and incidentally of the work that was being done in the interest of certain senatorial candidates. Gardwell cut the interview short, and Tusher obsequiously bowed himself out, swelling to his former size and importance as the door closed.
