It was difficult — it took every ounce of self-control he could muster — and for several seconds he watched his own knuckles turn white. The two young officers studied the ground. The space was too small for a fight. Eventually, he said: ‘I don’t understand how a detail like the ice-cream guy could get overlooked. You all know the first twenty-four hours are crucial.’ Genovesi was clasping and unclasping his fists, warming up now, thought Scamarcio.
