To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
This in a measure explains the large minority in which the gentler sex appears. In Queensland there is no State Church, and all re- ligions are regarded as equal. The Church of England and the other denominations have places of worship in every centre of population. The voluntary system has prevailed since i860, in which year an Act was passed abolishing State aid to religion. Those ministers who, at the time this Act was passed, were receiving stipends an- nually from the public treasury, cont...inue to receive them so long as they officiate in the colony. The voluntary system has hitherto worked very well ; the members of the various denominations subscribing liberally to the funds for providing salaries for the ministers and church accommodation. In 1876 the Church of England was represented by the Bishop of Brisbane, the Right Rev. Dr. Hale, and thirty-one clergymen. The number of places of worship is not given, which would seem to indicate that Queensland is behind the sister colonies in that respect.
