What reading level is The Fight book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
KING OF THE FLUNKIES HUNTER THOMPSON was tall and had the rangy build of a college halfback from a small school. Although he was half-bald and a little over thirty, he never lost that look. He could be suffering physical agony but he never appeared in more pain than showed on his high forehead, which was usually full of the dew of a quiet sweat. He perspired. That was the sole price he seemed to pay for swallowing more chemicals to bring him up and take him down than any good living writer. He c...ould probably drink more beer than all but a hundred men alive. He obviously possessed a memorable constitution. By now, however, he was so strung out that he squeaked if you poked a finger near his belly. He was a set of nerves balanced on another set of nerves traveling on squeaky roller skates. Here to cover the fight for Rolling Stone, he hated the heavenly raptures of all who were here to be happy for the fight. He hated the assignment. Hunter took one look at Kinshasa and tried to charter a plane to Brazzaville.

No Norman you are wrong. The penholder grip is the most antiquated grip, although in more recent years it was revived by the very agile Chinese and Japanese. To kill a ball with a penholder grip on the backhand (this grip uses on a single face all the time) one must contort and twist his body, from the feet through the waist , to the shoulders and then the arm, so as to make sure that the ball stays on the table and does not fly away wide.
One advantage is that because of the contorted way it has to be played, htere is a strong slice or cross pull on the ball which causes it to curve in mid air, and make it's eventual landing spot on the table uncertain. And it will still be spinning when the opponent hits it back, which requires a different skill.
however, today's especially concocted rubber, on the faces of the bats are made so that they impart their own very special kind of response, spin, drag, slide etc. A top class player need to know the name, model and property of every bat on the market do that he can adapt his play to it.
takes away all the real sport and enjoyment of playing that we used to have. I myself wwas a tournament standard player for many years with many minor trophies, close to my country's international level and playing-and often beating- those international in tournaments. My game was ruined when the new "funny rubber" it was called) bats became standard. I got one which was a "dead" bat, that negated most or all of the effects of the funny rubber, but..it made a sharp attacking stroke much slower and less effective. in essence it was a defensive bat, and countered very heavy topspin easily. Ny tactics were to simulate a heavy "chop" or backspin in my defensive stroke, which, because it really was a bogus act, caused the opponent to lift his return stroke far too much and off the table. I beat many young champions that way even when more than twice their age. i played at this level until I was past 60.

King murdered two men. The numbers runner (who owed him $500) he stamped and kicked to death weighed 115 lbs, very undersized and weak. King is 6'6" and weighs about 280 lbs. The earlier murder was one in which he shot an intruder in the back, He was freed by bought, threatened and perjured witnesses.
