To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

But, haply, if thou deem'st that Earth and Air, And Fire and Water, may together blend, And yet preserve their diverse characters, Nothing organic could be formed of them ; Nor creatures having souls, nor those without : For each, in such a heap confused, would show Its proper essence ; nothing would appear But mingled Fire and Water, Air and Earth. In short, primordial parts of concrete forms Must not submit their qualities to sense, Lest these appearing should deprive the forms, Wherein they ...chance, at times, to congregate, Of their own private essences distinct.
ON THE NATURE OF THINGS. 37 Then they deduce three of their Elements From yon bright orbs which blaze amid the sky ; Supposing Air derivative from these ; Water from Air ; and then, from Water, Earth, From whence Fire gradually proceeds again ; And, thus, that Elements inconstant share Each other's native qualities, which ought To be incapable of change in each ; For else might everything return to nought. For when an Element bounds oversteps By Nature once assigned, that ceases then To be which was before ; so that Earth, Air, Water, and Fire could not be changed at all, But that they change the germs which they contain, These being, thro' all Time, immutable ; For else, again might all return to nought.
