General Description of Sokoto— City of Sokoto — ^Kano — Katsena — ^Adamawa — Yoto, The Empire of Sokoto is situated in the centre of Soudan, and forms the largest and perhaps the most powerful state in that country. It was founded about the year 1802 by Othman. When this remarkable man began his career as a reformer, he was vanquished at almost every encounter; but the fanatical zeal of his followers, whom he continually inspired with fresh energy by h...is religious songs, was so great that he gradually overcame all obstacles, and at length suc- ceeded in laying the foundation of a vast empire, which he divided at his death, giving Sokoto to his son Bello and Gando to his nephew. Gando, on the south by pagan states, and on the north by Agades. It is divided into several provinces, each ruled by a governor appointed by the Sultan.
