In five days after Rachel had sent this letter she re- ceived a large '^ registered " letter, the second which she remembered to have received in her life. This did not contain a certificate of stock. It contained several pho- tographs of public buildings in Appleby, a portrait of THE ANCILLARY ESTABLISHMENT. 13...3 the well remembered face of Mr. Parry, the clergyman, and several notes and letters from him and Dr. Balfour to John Wolff, which showed quite distinctly how that gentleman had advanced from the relations of a stranger interested in the local antiquities to a near acquaintance amounting almost to intimacy.
