Description of Plate XVI.
ONE SIDE OF ONE OF THE MARBLE WALLS OR SCREENS OF THE COMITIUM.
This sculpture shews the Magistrate (?) or the Emperor (?) seated on his curule chair surrounded by the officers of the court, and the procession of persons with an orator at their head, standing on a rostrum and addressing the Emperor ; in the back- ground the entablature and cornice of a basilica, or market-hall, is represented. This is believed to be a view of the Forum Roma- num itself a...t that period ; it is of the time of Hadrian, and the figure seated on a throne is probably that Emperor. According to another theory the two figures on the raised /^^/z^w, or basement, are sculptures ; the male figure seated, the Emperor Trajan ; the female figure standing, Italia, with a baby in her arms in long clothes, to commemorate the foundation of an Orphanage by that Emperor.
The figure under the fig-tree at the end of the wall is either Sil- vanus, or Marsyas, with his wine-bag. The same fig-tree and idol is represented on both the walls.
