What reading level is The Foundations of Mechanics book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

The unit of energy is the same with the unit of work. When the point of applica- tion of an effort has been moved through a given distance, energy is said to have been exerted to an amount expressed by the product of the effort into the distance through which its point of application has been moved" 100. It may be argued that in these definitions Rankine intended to include the resistance — allowing for the moment the use of the term in that connection — of inertia, which would exist even where... there are only two bodies concerned That this was not the case (apart from the absurdity of speaking of i lb. of inertia) is made abundantly clear as follows : — 101. (a) Rankings definition of resistance (Art 511) is as follows: — "A direct force is further distinguished according as it acts with or against the motion of the point .... by the name of effort, or of resistance, as the case may be." Now inertia certainly cannot be an effort, therefore it cannot be a resistance.
102. (b) If the inertia be added to the resistance, and the sum considered equal to the effort, then energy exerted and work done are always equal, being, in fact, opposite views of the same thing.
