The first — and, if correct, conclusive — ob- jection against the apostolic origin of the Fourth Gospel is this : It f^ives a view of the character of Jesus so different from that of the Synoptics cts to constitute another person. The character of Jesus as represented by the Synoptics and that rtpresented by John are contradictory to ectch ot/ier.
M. Albert R^ville {Revue des Deux Mondes^ liv.
de Mai i, 1866) thus describes this difference: In the first three Gospels, Jesus is a teacher of the
...Truth; but, in the Fourth, he is the Truth itself. In the Synoptics, he appears as a man; in the Fourth Gospel, as the Word of God. He finds in its author a scholar of Philo, who had appropriated his Platonic theory of the Word, as Digitized by VjOOQIC 32 THE PROBLEM OF THE FOURTH GOSPEL the indwelling, unuttered thought of God (Uyog hdiadirog), and as the manifested divine reason {Uyoq Trpw^piKdq). This Word, according to him, appeared among men as Jesus of Nazareth, and, being essential light, was opposed by the darkness.
