Men in the l^ortli still said that human servitude was sinful. The President still believed that " slavery is in the course of ul- timate extinction. " Ko fraternitj with such men ! No obedience to such a President !
And yet this President, in the same Inaugural from which I have quoted, pushed forbearance to the verge of that boundary beyond which it ceases to be a virtue.
