An old FIRST LECTURE 23 chronicler tells us that upon receipt of the news all the inhabitants fled into the woods in their dread fear of the Justices^. In 22 Edward III the Commons made it a con- dition for granting supplies to the King for two years that during that time Ejres should cease throughout the Kingdom. In the forty-fifth year of the same reign the "poor commoners " prayed the King " that he would per- mit no Ejnre to be held in any part of the kingdom during the war to the troubling... and impoverishment of the com- mons." It was recognized even by the King and his advisers that no county could endure a General Eyre oftener than once in seven years. In 1261 the Justices in Esrre came to Worcester, but the whole coimty rose up in angry protest and refused to receive them, because seven years had not passed since the last Eyre*; and an E5a-e in Norfolkin Henry Ill's time was postponed because seven years had not elapsed since the previous one*.
But the longer an Eyre was postponed the more terrible it was when it really came; and this, too, I shall leave to prove itsdf in its proper place.
