As he stands on the balcony of his palace at midnight, surveying thehavoc he has unintentionally wrought, the smoke of the burning cottageis wafted toward him and takes the form of four gray old women. One ofthem, Dame Care, slips into the rich man's palace by way of thekeyhole and croons in his ear her dismal litany of care. Faust repliesin a fine declaration of independence, beginning-- The circle of the Earth is known to me, What's on the other side we can not see. As Dame Care leaves him sh...e breathes on his eyelids and makes himblind. But the inner light is not quenched. His hunger for life stillunabated, he summons up all his energy and orders out an army ofworkmen to complete a great undertaking on which he has set his heart. On the edge of his domain, running along the distant foot-hills, is amiasmatic swamp which poisons the air and renders the landuninhabitable. He proposes to drain the swamp and thus create a homefor millions yet to come. His imagination ranges forward, picturing a free, industrious, self-reliant people swarming on the land that he has won from the seaand made fit for human uses.
