I suspect that if each one of us were able to look back over his church-going experience, and to fix upon the sermons which have come home to him most, and in which he has seemed with the greatest awe and conviction to hear God speaking to him, those sermons would not be what others would agree to call the most remarkable or impressive which he has heard, but those which he has happened to hear at critical moments in his own personal history. The preacher may be saying something which passes as... mere commonplace through the ears of almost all the congregation ; but there may be one heart the soil of which God has himself prepared to receive what is spoken as seed from heaven. The heart may have been softened by sorrow or by thankfulness ; the self-conceit may have been taken out of it by humiliation ; earthly props and refuges may have abruptly failed ; remorse for sin may be impercep- tibly gnawing at the inward spirit ; a course of thought and inquiry may have led up just to one particular point ; doubt of a particular kind may have come to a momentary crisis ; and so it may happen that the old familiar testimony to the grace and the righteousness of God the Saviour may come like comfort or warning or guidance specially vouchsafed to the one sinner needing it, and may be bread from heaven to the hungry, living water to the thirsty.
