Culms erect but weak, smooth, 2 to 6 feet tall ; leaves smooth thru- out, the blades 3 to 9 inches long, 6 to 15 mm. Wide ; panicles 6 to 20 inches long, the drooping branches usually roughened with short, stiff hairs ; spikelets 3 to 3. 5 mm. Long, the surface of the glumes rough. This species is usually found in rich, moist woods. It is native to the northern part of America and is also found in the north of Europe and Asia. KANE co. Elgin, Vasey. TAZEWELL co.
