In 1914, the old world, as we knew it, sud- THE GREAT EXPECTANCY 29 denly became without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep ; but now we begin to be- lieve that all the time the spirit of God was moving upon the face of the waters, and that presently He shall say, 'Let there be light/ The first act of the great drama was war and blood and destruction, and the second act was the same, more agony, more grief, terror, and destruction; but now there begins to be a great hope flaring through the darkness in many different quarters, and the voices of watchmen set upon towers begin to cry the glim- mer of daybreak.
