One night, as she was lying all dressed on her bed to seek an hour's rest, she was roused to find her room full of armed mountaineers, and for a moment she thought she was in the hands of the enemy, until, by the light of the pine torches which they held in their hands, she could distinguish the features of their leader, Costa Bastelica, a most devoted friend of her sons, who said to her : " Be quick, Signora Letitia, the Paolists are on our heels ; there is not a moment to lose, all my men are here with me, and we will rescue you or die in your defence."
