Tennyson's references to science are much more numerous than Arnold's, though probably its real influence upon him was less. Every reader must have noticed how his imagination dwells upon the discoveries of modern astronomy. He was prof oundly impressed by the conception of multitudes of "peopled spheres " as well as earth. He was interested in the discoveries of physiology, and in In Memoriam borrows a striking fact... from embryology. But we find in his acceptance of the evolutionary view his principal point of contact with science. Of Tennyson's direct references to evolution, some of the most emphatic, and probably the best known, are in Locksley Hall, considerably prior to the formulation of the theory by Darwin. Even disappointed passion does not long dash the confidence of the hero that the course of the world is forward ; and if he refers to the belief in a golden age away back in the simpler past of the race, it is only to reject that belief with disdain.
