" 43 The discovery of gold in California, with the tide of emigration from Oregon that followed, seriously imperilled the future of Catholic education in the Terri- tory. Not only many of the laity left the coun- try, but members of the clergy and all the mem- bers of the sisterhood newly implanted i...n the diocese went to California, to take up religious or educational work there. St. Joseph's College was closed, and the Archbishop was left prac- tically without Catholic teachers. But the spirit of the intrepid pioneer and apostle rose superior to the crisis. After journeying to South America, on a collecting tour, to relieve his serious finan- cial embarrassments, he hastened to Montreal, to secure, if possible, new religious teachers for his schools. Meanwhile, with an undaunted faith in the future, he purchased a large unfin- ished frame building in the rising city of Port- land, to be used as an academy and school.
